Last updated 2026-09-18
AI visibility is whether an AI assistant — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google’s AI — recommends your business when someone asks for the best option in your category. It’s measured, not guessed: you ask the same questions a real buyer would ask, across every major engine, and score whether and how your business shows up against named competitors. GR8ER2 runs that measurement, diagnoses why the result looks the way it does, and does the work most likely to change it.
SEO vs AEO vs GEO
The three disciplines overlap but answer different questions.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optimises for | Ranking in a list of links | Being the direct answer to a spoken or typed question | Being cited or recommended inside a generated AI answer |
| Where it shows up | Search engine results pages | Featured snippets, voice assistants | ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews |
| Unit of success | Position on a results page | Winning the single answer slot | Being named, quoted, or recommended |
| What GR8ER2 measures | Not our focus | Partially, where it overlaps with GEO | Directly — this is the audit |
AI visibility work draws on all three, but the questions it answers are GEO’s: is a model recommending you, and if not, why not.
A note on “Google’s AI”
There are two different surfaces: AI Overviews (the answer box in Google Search) and AI Mode (Google’s conversational search). Neither has a public API, so today we measure Google’s Gemini model directly, alongside ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity — and we are building licensed measurement of AI Overviews and AI Mode so the Gr8 Score covers the exact surface your customers see. We’ll say plainly which surface any number comes from.
The method
- Measure — real buyer questions, run across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s Gemini, scored against your named competitors.
- Diagnose — why you do or don’t appear: entity data, content shape, citations, technical access.
- Build — the highest-leverage fixes done for you: crawler access, entity data, Google Business, top pages rewritten answer-first with schema.
- Re-run — the identical test again, so the result is a measured before/after, not an assertion.
Every Gr8 Score we report is measured to the GR8ER2 Standard →, which publishes the question set, the run count and the margin of error behind the number.
What actually moves it
A 2024 academic study tested nine content interventions against a 1,000-query test set, averaged over five runs, to see which ones actually change how often a source is cited or quoted by generative engines

Keyword stuffing
The most ingrained SEO habit of the last twenty years
Keyword stuffing is the only one of the nine that measured negative. It also showed a +4.7% change on the paper’s secondary metric even as it dropped on the primary one

— worth stating plainly rather than only citing the number that flatters the point. What you get
The AI Visibility Audit (free) gives you a four-engine measured baseline Gr8 Score, a competitor scoreboard, and a 90-day plan. Ongoing Management starts from R9,500/month; Foundation Build and the Growth and Leadership tiers are scoped and priced on application.
What we don’t promise
We don’t promise placements, rankings, or that any specific engine will recommend you. Nobody who is being honest with you can promise that — no one controls what a model decides to say, and anyone claiming otherwise is not describing how these systems work.
What we commit to instead: a real, repeatable measurement; the work we believe is most likely to move it, based on the best evidence available; and reporting the number honestly whichever way it moves, including if it doesn’t move at all.
FAQs
What is AI visibility?
Whether ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI recommend your business when someone asks for the best option in your category — measured against real buyer questions, not guessed at.
Isn’t this just SEO?
Related, but a different job. SEO optimises for a position in a list of links. AI visibility (GEO) optimises for being named, quoted or recommended inside a generated answer that often has no list at all.
How is GEO different from AEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is about winning the single direct-answer slot — a featured snippet, a voice assistant response. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is about how a generative AI model chooses what to cite or recommend when it writes an answer from scratch. They overlap; GEO is the newer and less understood discipline, and it’s our primary focus.
Can you guarantee my business will be recommended?
No — and here’s why nobody honest can: no one controls what a model decides to say, including the companies that build the models. What we can do is measure your current visibility, do the work most likely to move it, and re-run the same test so you can see exactly what changed.
How do you measure it?
We run a fixed set of real buyer questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s Gemini, and score whether and how your business appears against your named competitors. That becomes your baseline Gr8 Score, and the same set is re-run later so the comparison is like-for-like.
How long does it take to see movement?
We can’t give you an honest universal number — how quickly an engine re-indexes and re-evaluates a source varies by engine and by how much work is needed. What we commit to is re-running the identical test on a set cadence, so you see the real trend rather than a promised date.
How do you prove ROI?
The same way we establish the baseline: by re-running the identical set of buyer questions across the same engines and showing the before-and-after Gr8 Score, competitor by competitor. That’s a measured comparison, not a projection.
Isn’t it cheaper to just buy a tool?
A monitoring tool can tell you whether you’re mentioned. It won’t diagnose why, and it won’t do the work to change it. The Audit includes the measurement; Management includes the diagnosis and the build work on top of it.
We’re a small business — is this for us?
Yes. The questions a buyer asks an AI assistant don’t care about company size, and a small, well-structured entity often has less to fix than a large one with years of inconsistent information scattered across the web.
What does it cost?
The AI Visibility Audit is free — a real, measured Gr8 Score baseline and a 90-day plan. Ongoing management is priced on application, from R9,500/month depending on scope. 90-day minimum, then month-to-month. No lock-in. You keep everything we build.
